China flew 28 fighter jets around Taiwan on Sept. 17 and most of them crossed the dividing line into the Taiwan Strait, authorities in Taipei said. According to authorities, Chinese fliers have conducted unspecified "long-range" missions.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said 20 aircraft were detected early Sunday morning that crossed the line separating Taiwan from China and entered the self-governing island's air defense identification zone. According to Taiwan, the flyers entered the southeastern part of the island.
China has carried out "missions like long-range exercises," the Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding it was monitoring the situation through aircraft and patrol vessels.
Beijing claims Taiwan is part of its territory and will one day take control of it, even if necessary by using force. China has increased military activity and diplomatic pressure on the island in recent years as relations between Taipei and Beijing deteriorate.
Last week, Taipei reported an increase in the number of incursions by Chinese warplanes and ships, while Beijing said its forces had been put on "high alert" after two U.S. and Canadian ships transited through the Taiwan Strait this month.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said 68 Chinese aircraft and ten ships had been detected around the island on Wednesday and Thursday.
Some of the aircraft and warships were heading towards an unspecified area in the Western Pacific "to conduct naval and air exercises." The exercises were also attended by the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, the ministry said.
Shandong, one of two active aircraft carriers in the Chinese fleet, was detected on Monday about 110 kilometers (<> miles) southeast of Taiwan heading for the Western Pacific, authorities in Taipei said.
China has not commented on holding any drills in the Western Pacific.
In April, Beijing conducted military exercises simulating the island's siege after Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen, met in California with House speaker Kevin McCarthy. Taiwan detected 71 Chinese fighter jets in 24 hours, the highest number of aircraft the island has detected in a day since December 2022. /REL
