Biden: Israel is starting to lose support around the world

US President Joe Biden declared on Tuesday that Israel has begun to lose the support of the international community due to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, which has killed thousands of Palestinian civilians.

"They're starting to lose support," President Biden said Tuesday during a fundraiser in Washington. He also said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must change his hardline government.

President Biden said that Israel cannot oppose the Palestinian state in the future, increasing the pressure on the Israeli authorities. He singled out right-wing politician Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's national security minister, and said "this is the most conservative government in Israel's history."

"Netanyahu must change the government. This government in Israel is making things difficult," said President Biden. He said Israel "cannot say no" to a Palestinian state, which is opposed by hard-line Israelis.

President Biden said that "we have an opportunity to unite the region... and they still want to do such a thing. But we have to make sure that Bibi (Netanyahu) understands that he has to make an effort... You can't say no to a Palestinian state... That will be the hard part.”

Meanwhile, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he will discuss with Israeli officials their timelines for the Gaza war and the post-war plan for the Palestinian territory during his next visit to Israel.

Israel is under increased international pressure to do more to limit Palestinian civilian deaths in Gaza as it aims to destroy Hamas.

Sullivan blamed the militant group Hamas for violating the cease-fire with Israel, which lasted from November 24 to December 1, by refusing to release the hostages.

"Hamas continues to hold women, the elderly, and other civilians hostage. And yet it still wants the fighting to stop. We believe that Israel has the right to defend itself,” Sullivan said.

President Biden on Wednesday is expected to meet at the White House with family members of American citizens kidnapped by Hamas after the October 7 attack during which the militants killed 1,200 people in settlements in southern Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Tuesday that Israel continues to enjoy the support of the United States in its bid to destroy Hamas and return hostages held by the militant group.

He again opposed the possibility of the Palestinian Authority governing Gaza.

"I want to make my position clear: I will not allow Israel to repeat the mistake of Oslo," he said without clarifying what mistake he was referring to.

Israeli attacks, which almost completely destroyed the northern part of Gaza, left 18,000 dead and displaced about 80 percent of the population of the Gaza Strip, continued on Tuesday in the southern part of the enclave. In the border town of Rafah, an area approved for sheltering civilians, residential buildings were flattened by Israeli airstrikes, leaving at least 23 dead.

Islam Harbi's three children were killed in this attack while they were sheltering in their home with nine other refugees.

"Four houses were bombed with three missiles dropped by F16 planes. Nine displaced from other parts of Gaza and my twin daughters Maria and Jude were killed, my little son Ammar was also killed,” he said.

In central Gaza, Al-Aqsa Hospital has confirmed 33 casualties from airstrikes on buildings near the Maghazi refugee camp, including 16 women and four children.
