Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is being considered to become Europe's representative to mediate Russia-Ukraine peace agreement negotiations.

In political circles, Merkel is being described as the best candidate for the role of mediator because she personally knows both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Another factor being considered is the fact that she has been out of office for quite some time.

Europeans and Germans argue that Merkel has credibility in Europe, unlike Schröder, and speaks fluent Russian.

The former chancellor's office said it had not received any official request to participate in the negotiations so far, and did not respond to questions about whether Merkel would be willing to take on the role in the future.

European countries want to participate directly in the dialogue with Moscow, taking into account the previous experience of US mediation.

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, noted that the mediator must have broad support across the EU. The agreement of the Eastern European and Baltic countries is considered particularly important in this matter.

On May 9, the Russian leader said he considers former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder the EU's best candidate to participate in potential negotiations to end the war.

The idea was rejected in Germany. A German official stressed that Schröder's candidacy as a mediator between the EU and the aggressor country is not being considered.

On Monday, May 11, media reports said that Berlin is discussing the candidacy of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a potential negotiator between Europe and Russia.
