Britain's Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has launched an investigation into whether Reform Party leader Nigel Farage breached the House of Commons Code of Conduct for accepting and failing to declare a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.
The Reform UK leader is accused of taking the money weeks before announcing he would stand in the 2024 general election.
Farage has said the gift was intended to cover his personal security costs and therefore did not need to be declared.
However, the Labour Party and other parties argue that MPs must declare any potentially significant gifts or donations received in the 12 months before entering parliament and that the money from Thailand-based Harborne falls within those rules.
If the investigation finds that Farage has committed a particularly serious breach of parliamentary statement rules, he could be suspended from the House of Commons.
A suspension of 10 days or more could trigger a petition for dismissal, potentially forcing him to fight for his place in Clacton again.
