Donald Trump has pledged to suspend the federal gas tax in the United States, after the war with Iran caused fuel prices to rise sharply. The proposal has received support from both sides of the political spectrum in the country, but has also faced opposition from some leading Republicans who are reluctant to cut a major source of federal funding.
Those who do not support the proposal argue that suspending the federal tax is not a good long-term strategy. The federal fuel tax, 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel, provides about $500 million each week to the federal government.
Rising fuel prices, which also affect the price of food and other goods, are a weak point for Trump and Republicans trying to retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections. The national average gasoline price hit $4.52 a gallon this week in the U.S., approaching its highest level since 2022.
