Red alert, Brazil faces unprecedented heat wave

Red alerts have been issued for nearly 3,000 towns and cities in Brazil, which is facing an unprecedented heat wave. Records have been broken in several areas, including the city of Rio de Janeiro - where the temperature was felt to be 52.5 degrees Celsius.

More than 100 million people have been affected by the heat, which is expected to last until Friday. Brazilian officials have said that the El Nino phenomenon and climate change are behind such weather.

The city of Sao Paulo recorded an average of 37.3 degrees Celsius at noon on Tuesday, the National Institute of Meteorology reported.

"I'm devastated, it's hard. When I get home, I take a cold shower, otherwise I can't wake up because I'm so tired. It's hard to even sleep," 22-year-old Riquelme da Silva told the AFP news agency.

Dora, a 60-year-old street vendor, described the heat as "unbearable" for those who work outdoors. This hot weather was recorded in Brazil, more than a month before the start of summer in the southern hemisphere.

According to scientists, heat waves are becoming longer and more intense in many countries, and this situation is expected to continue unless measures are taken to combat the emission of greenhouse gases.

Meanwhile, the world is now facing the El Nino phenomenon, during which global temperatures rise, due to the significant warming of water in the oceans./REL
