Will Europe see more snow this winter?

After the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) officially confirmed the return of the El Niño weather phenomenon in July, experts say that extreme weather conditions are likely to continue during the winter and early next year.

In support of this, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there is a 95 percent chance that a moderate to strong El Niño season will continue until February 2024.

Effects of El Niño

El Niño is a phenomenon of warming water temperatures in the eastern and central parts of the Pacific Ocean and is associated with the occurrence of extreme weather conditions – from tropical cyclones to heavy rainfall to drought.

The effects of El Niño typically last 9 to 12 months, sometimes years, peaking between November and January. Scientists don't yet understand why this happens, suggesting there's a lot we don't know about weather patterns.

The current phenomenon is expected to continue until 2024, and experts predict that it will strengthen even more in the coming months and end in the spring of next year.

What kind of winter can we expect in Europe?

However, the complex puzzle of the world's weather systems makes it difficult to predict how El Niño will affect Europe's weather during the year.

According to experts, in the west, El Niño could bring a mild and wet winter. In the northern part of Europe, the winter may be drier and colder, while according to forecasts in southern Europe it may bring wetter conditions.
