US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the "hands of a foreign actor" were involved in the suspected terror plot targeting a British air base used by the US military, revealing more details about the investigation than British authorities, who have faced criticism from President Donald Trump.

"What happened this weekend could have been, and was, a very serious threat," Rubio told Fox News on Monday night, adding that "there will be a lot more news" regarding the matter.

"It's something that clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor. I'm not going to go into too much detail about that yet," he added.

Five men, whose identities have not been made public, were arrested early Sunday near the base in Fairford, western England, from where US B-1 bombers have carried out missions against Iran.

But the suspects, who police said are all British citizens, aged 23 to 25 and from the London area, were released on bail on Monday. This prompted criticism from US President Donald Trump, who said: “I wouldn’t have done that.”

Trump said the suspects "could be" linked to Iran. "I know the answer, I can be very specific, but I'd rather not say it," he told reporters in the Oval Office.

Rubio's comments that the case "clearly" involved a foreign actor were more direct, though he declined to provide details. Iran has strongly denied any involvement in the incident.
