Giorgia Meloni

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has supported the measure, stressing that no one should be forced to cover their face.

The decision is part of a package of measures by the Italian government aimed at strengthening integration in the education system.

In addition to banning face coverings, the Italian executive also envisages limiting the number of foreign students in classes as well as fines for parents in certain cases when children do not learn Italian.

Meloni argues that full face coverings are incompatible with the principles of individual freedom and cultural openness in school environments.

For the measure, which does not affect the headscarf, to come into effect, it must be approved by the Italian Parliament.

Meloni made the announcement during a youth event organized by her party, Fratelli D'Italia, at a time when the integration of immigrants and migration policies continue to be among the main issues of political debate in Italy.

Elly Schlein, secretary of the opposition Democratic Party, spoke of a witch hunt and harshly criticized the decree, arguing that the government is targeting measures against foreign children instead of solving other problems of Italian schools, such as the condition of buildings, the cost of books, and teachers' salaries.
