A shocking discovery in Pompeii comes to illuminate one family's final struggle against the "fury" of Vesuvius, during the fatal eruption of August 24, 79 AD.

During excavations in the Pompeii Archaeological Park, archaeologists discovered the "House of Ella and Phrixus", on Via del Vesuvio (Vesuvius Street), a residence that was first discovered in 2018 and took its name from a mythological mural that decorates one of its rooms.

A fight for survival

Inside this small but ornately decorated house, traces of the residents' desperate attempt to save themselves were found. Excavators found the bed wedged behind the bedroom door — a makeshift attempt to create a barrier, perhaps to prevent the ingress of ash or hot gases, according to the Daily Mail. However, death proved inevitable.

The remains of at least four people, including a child, were found at the scene. Archaeologists also found a bronze amulet, known as a bulla, which the child was likely wearing and was a symbol of protection in ancient Rome.

"Excavating and visiting Pompeii means coming face to face with the beauty of art, but also with the fragility of our lives," commented the Park's director, Gabriele Cuctrigel.

"In this small house, we found traces of people who tried to save themselves, blocking the entrance to a room with a bed, from which we created a plaster model," he said.

The house's layout includes a grand entrance that leads to a veranda, a bedroom, and a banquet hall. Experts estimate that the first signs of volcanic activity entered the interior through an opening in the atrium roof, which was designed to drain rainwater. Perhaps this opening was the first warning to the house's residents.

However, despite their timely response, the outcome was tragic. “They didn’t make it,” Chuktrigel noted. “Finally came the pyroclastic flow—a deadly wave of ash and hot gases that filled every room, while seismic tremors had already caused the collapse of many buildings. It was an inferno that struck the city that day, traces of which we can still find to this day.”

Evidence of life and culture

In addition to human remains, the excavators also found everyday objects that testify to the family's lifestyle. A pile of amphorae was discovered in the house's storage room, while the finds also included a series of bronze vessels: a spoon, a jug, a basket vase, and a shell-shaped cup.

The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD buried Pompeii in ash and rock. None of the inhabitants survived, as the city was engulfed by pyroclastic flows.
