Our concept of politics as a division between left and right was born in revolutionary France. The political maps that came after were more sophisticated, but each carries its own biases.

By Frank Jacobs - Big Think

Why do we place politicians on a spectrum from left to right? It's the French's fault.

On September 11, 1789, the newly formed National Assembly of France voted on whether the king should be given the right to veto laws. It was not an insignificant procedural issue. As a direct challenge to the absolute power of Louis XVI, it was a defining moment of the French Revolution.

Defenders of the monarchy, who favored the veto, gathered to the right of the speaker. Radicals, who wanted to limit the king's power, sat to his left. It was from that historic seating arrangement, at a meeting held more than two centuries ago, that the most famous division in democratic politics was born: left versus right.

La gauche, the left, became synonymous with revolutionary forces seeking to abolish privileges and give more power to ordinary citizens. La droite, the right, represented the counter-revolutionaries, the conservatives who tried to keep the old order, which was collapsing, afloat.

Within a year, the terms had become a common part of the political vocabulary in France. Over the next century, "left" and "right" spread into political discussions around the world. This simple way of describing political beliefs is still used today. However, over time, this model has begun to show its limitations. In fact, it was flawed from the moment it was created.

A propaganda gift that continues today

One of the problems lay in the language itself. In French, the word gauche also means awkward or awkward. While droit, like the English word right, means not only "right", but also "straight".

This linguistic bias is much older than the French Revolution, or even the French language itself. In Latin, the word for "left" is sinister, which has the meaning of something sinister or malevolent. While "right" is dexter, from which comes the word "dexterity," which has a positive meaning. Even in the Bible, Jesus stands at God's right hand, not His left.

It doesn't take much imagination to connect this bias, present in dozens of languages ??and cultures, to the fact that most people are right-handed. Only about 10% of the population uses their left hand as their dominant hand.

For the political descendants of the monarchy's supporters, being "on the right" has been a propaganda advantage that continues today. While those who identify with the left must constantly contend with the negative connotations that the word "left" has historically had.

Communists, Nazis and the Horseshoe Theory

But the problem is not just terminology. In 1972, French political scientist Jean-Pierre Faye coined the term "political horseshoe" after studying Weimar Republic Germany.

Noting that communists and Nazis often collaborated in the early 1930s to weaken the German liberal center, Faye proposed that the further you move from the political center, the closer the ends of the spectrum come together. So the political spectrum is not a straight line, but curves like a horseshoe.

Whether in a line or a horseshoe shape, the left-right divide dominated most of the 20th century, which can be summarized, in a simplified way, as follows: capitalism combined with democracy defeated first fascism on the right and then communism on the left.

But these divisions no longer accurately describe 21st-century politics. Someone can have strongly left-wing beliefs on some issues and strongly right-wing ones on others. This creates unusual political alliances and unexpected shifts in voting patterns.

The traditional model fails to explain why so many Bernie Sanders supporters in 2016 later voted for Donald Trump. But these voters were not confused or irrational. They were reacting to something the classic model fails to capture: a deep distrust of the establishment, whether left or right, and an equally strong desire to overthrow the entire system.

Economic freedom and personal freedom

To better understand these developments, politics must be seen not as a one-dimensional line, but as a two-dimensional field, that is, as a map.

One of the most influential models is the Nolan Chart, published in 1971 by David Nolan, the founder of the Libertarian Party of the United States.

Nolan argued that every ideology should be evaluated along two distinct dimensions: how much control it gives the state over citizens' economic decisions and how much control it gives them over their personal lives. According to him, the traditional left-right spectrum mistakenly conflates these two distinct issues into a single one.

By placing economic freedom and personal freedom on two separate axes, the Nolan Chart creates four quadrants, with libertarianism, not coincidentally, at the top. While this may be seen as a choice in favor of the author's ideology, the basic idea remains valid.

George Orwell do të ishte dakord

Our concept of politics as a division between left and right was born in

George Orwell do të ishte dakord me këtë.

It was a compromise that satisfied no one. The monarchists wanted a more powerful king, while about 150 radical deputies did not accept any kind of royal veto.

However, this vote did nothing to bring the crown closer to the hungry people.

A few weeks later, the mobs marched on Versailles, occupied the royal palace, and sent the king and queen to Paris as prisoners, and then, ultimately, to the guillotine. For that moment, the left had won.
