Gaza Cleanup/CNN Analysis: Why Trump's Surprising Plan Is the Most Absurd Idea in Middle East History

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu couldn't hold back his laughter.

And it's no wonder. President Donald Trump announced the most surprising U.S. intervention in the long history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Trump suggested that nearly 2 million Palestinians should be relocated from Gaza to new homes elsewhere, so that the US could send troops to the Strip, take ownership and build the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

"Build good quality housing, like a beautiful city, like a place where they can live and not die, because Gaza is a guarantee that they will end up dying," Trump told reporters.

In addition to Jordan and Egypt, which he has previously asked to take in Palestinians, Trump said there will be four other countries where Palestinian people will be relocated. He did not specify which four countries they are, but has previously said only that he will send Palestinians "to places where they can live in peace."

In short, Trump has unveiled a startling geopolitical transformation of the Middle East and a political lifeline for Netanyahu. The US president’s views now parallel the Israeli hardliners’ desire to see the Palestinians expelled from part of what they see as Israel’s holy land.

Israel's far-right former national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who left Netanyahu's war cabinet earlier this year to protest the Gaza ceasefire deal, confirmed the synergy between Trump's thinking and extreme conservatives in Israel.

"Donald, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship," he wrote in a post on X.

A surprising moment

Trump's comments were a landmark moment in the history of US peacemaking in the Middle East.

To see an American president support what would be the forcible expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, in an exodus that would overturn decades of American policy, international law, and basic humanity, was startling.

“The United States will take over the Gaza Strip,” Trump said. “We will own it and be responsible for dismantling all the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons in the country.”

A scheme proposed by Kushner?

The idea resembles a scheme proposed by Trump's investor son-in-law Jared Kushner last year to remove Palestinians from Gaza and "clear" it to develop the territory's "very valuable" Mediterranean coastline.

But it seems absurd for many reasons.

The idea of ??large numbers of Palestinians willing to leave Gaza for a suburban idyll elsewhere also rests on a superficial understanding of a conflict that left them dispossessed. Since the founding of Israel in 1948, hopes of return for thousands of Palestinians living in poverty in refugee camps in places like Beirut and Jordan have proven futile. Thus, Gazans would never leave on the basis of promises that they could one day return.

The idea that Trump would even open such a scheme is an indication of how the post-October 7 era has shaken up the strategic landscape in the Middle East. But it also displays an extraordinary shame, as recent US attempts to reshape Middle Eastern geopolitics – from Iraq to Libya – ended disastrously.

Is Trump real?

Trump's comments will fuel another round of speculation about whether he is serious about a bizarre plan, or whether he is using it to distract from some other, even more sinister scheme — perhaps his friend Elon Musk's expanded effort to destroy the US government from within.

So is Trump real – or is this just another dream of a president who often seems divorced from reality?

Trump's plan was met with great skepticism from Republican senators. Democratic Senator Chris Coons put his face in his hand and rubbed his cheeks. "I'm speechless. This is crazy," he said.

In his own way, Trump seems sincere about improving the lives of Gazans, even if his preferred medicine insults their identity.

That may not be all bad, given the dubious record of U.S. foreign policy in recent times. But Trump also faces a risk. His comments on Tuesday will send shockwaves across the Middle East and make it much harder for Arab governments to work with him to expand the Abraham Accords of his first term.
