Becchetti sues Albania again for refusal to pay fine and for
Francesco Becchetti and Edi Rama

Italian businessman Francesco Becchetti has launched another legal battle against Albania. This time, our country is being sued for refusing to pay the 110 million euro fine imposed by the Washington Arbitration Court in 2021.

According to the 'Global Arbitration Review', Becchetti and his associates who invested in Albania claim damages for Albania's refusal to pay the hefty fine imposed by the World Bank arbitration, but also with claims of an ongoing campaign of persecution, according to them, by Albania.

The complaint file includes statements from senior Albanian government officials, including Prime Minister Edi Rama, who stated that Francesco Becchetti has not received and will not receive a single penny from Albania.

Meanwhile, claims of continued persecution have been raised with the Albanian justice file, which has sentenced Becchetti to 17 years in prison for a value-added tax fraud scheme, tax evasion, and concealment of assets.

It is unclear in which court Francesco Becchetti's new claims have been raised, but the ICSID convention, the arbitration court that fined Albania, provides in its article 54 that any claim for refusal to enforce the decisions of this court can be appealed to the courts of the member countries of this convention, which are 163 states and entities.
