Roberto Carlos has recounted one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing the ordeal he faced off the pitch.

The Real Madrid and Brazilian national team left-back legend explained that, despite the staggering wealth he amassed during a glorious career, at a certain point he found himself on the verge of total financial collapse.

As he himself reveals, this crisis came about as a result of a clash with his former agent, intertwined with a serious family problem (Note: in the original text the term was incorrectly translated as “former coach”, but the statement clearly speaks of “former agent”). Within a few hours, the Brazilian found himself faced with a mountain of documents and financial obligations of which he had no knowledge. The blow was dramatic: in a single day he lost around 99% of the wealth he had acquired over the years in the world of football, thus showing the dark and unknown side of the life of a champion always accustomed to the peaks.

 He won everything with the Real Madrid jersey, as he was for years an undisputed pillar of the “Selecao”. However, the glory and millions did not save him from a situation that turned his life upside down in the blink of an eye.

Despite the deep shock, the former defender admitted that he had to make drastic decisions to regain control. “I had a serious problem with a former agent of mine, coupled with a very big family problem. On Thursday I went to bed at midnight, and on Friday morning I woke up in front of a stack of papers that I didn’t know existed. There I lost all control over my history, over everything I had built in football. In one day I lost 99% of everything I had won. Then, fortunately, I managed to restructure my financial situation and that of my family,” the Brazilian stressed, testifying how he managed to recover after that devastating collapse.
