Female-headed households spend on average about 20 thousand lek less per month than those headed by men, highlighting a strong difference in family consumption.
According to INSTAT, in 2024 the average monthly consumption expenditure was 93,042 lek per family. In male-headed households it amounted to 96,359 lek, while in female-headed households it was 76,235 lek.
The difference is 20,124 lekë per month, or about 21%. If this monthly difference is projected for 12 months, it amounts to about 241 thousand lekë.
But the consumption gap appears in a context where women have a weaker position in several labor market indicators. In 2025, the employment rate for women aged 15-64 was 62.7%, compared to 76% for men, while unemployment was 10.6% for women and 8.2% for men.
The mode of employment also shows that 25% of employed women were unpaid workers in the family business, while the average gross monthly salary of women was 4.6% lower than that of men.
The difference is also seen in economic vulnerability indicators. In 2024, the risk of being poor was 19.5% for women and 18.9% for men, while the risk of poverty or social exclusion (AROPE) reached 41.5% for women, compared to 39.4% for men.
Another element is related to the burden of unpaid work. Women continue to bear a greater share of childcare, elderly care and household chores, a commitment that is not reflected in wages, but affects the ability to work full-time and secure higher incomes. This is particularly important for families where the woman is the main or sole source of income./ Monitor
