The strengthening of the Lek against the Euro continues at an unbroken pace and is pulling the local currency to record levels against most other currencies.
According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, the Euro was exchanged today at the new historical minimum of 106.39 ALL, further down by 0.56 ALL compared to yesterday. The exchange rate between the Euro and the Lek has fallen by almost 11.3% compared to the same period a year ago.
The fall of the euro is sinking the exchange rate of other currencies with the local currency.
The British pound also set a new historical record of 123.58 ALL.
The American dollar fell again, to the level of 99.15 lek, touching the lowest value since September 2011.
The Swiss franc is also in strong decline and was traded on Thursday at 109.06 ALL, the lowest level in the last four years.
The high supply and low demand for currency in the market is bringing a galloping strengthening of the local currency. The main role in this trend is played by the performance of the Euro exchange rate, which is the reference foreign currency for the economy and also determines the performance of the exchange rate against other major currencies.
According to foreign exchange agents from the market, this situation can be explained by several factors. The increase in inbound tourism definitely has some kind of impact, although it does not alone justify the strengthening of the Lek to this extent and at such a fast pace.
Another factor, according to them, is the high-paced construction, which is largely financed with Euro resources. At the same time, purchase transactions absorb large inflows of foreign currency, either from foreign citizens or from Albanian emigrants abroad. This includes both formal and informal flows.
However, agents think that beyond the above elements, such a rapid fall in the euro rate cannot be explained without considering the psychological factor.
Now, it seems that the market has created strong expectations for the further strengthening of the Lek, taking into account the seasonal factor. This conditions the behavior of businesses and consumers, prompting them to rush to sell Euros, which further increases the supply and lowers the European currency rate even more.
The strong lek makes tourism for Albanians abroad cheaper and may be the impetus for more Albanians to travel abroad for vacation this year.
The Albanian government is registering a strong decrease in public debt in Euros, thanks to the strengthening of the Lek in the exchange rate. Private borrowers, who have loans in euros and income in Lek, are also registering similar benefits, in the form of a reduction in debt burden and a reduction in expenses for monthly loan installments./Monitor
