Emigration and aging are rapidly reducing Albania's population.
Eurostat's comparative data show that Gjirokastra and Korça were ranked among the European Regions with the largest decline in natural population growth in 2021.
The natural increase in the population of Gjirokastra fell from January 2021 to January 2022 by 7 percent, while in Korça district by 4.3 percent. In the map in the photo, the darkest golden regions represent the greatest decline in the natural increase of the population over 7 percent, and the lightest ones are the regions with the greatest increase in the natural increase. Also, the counties of Dibra, Kukës and Tirana are ranked among the regions with the highest natural surplus. In Albania, among other factors, the natural addition to the population was negatively affected by the high mortality caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, where additional deaths increase by about 30%.
Between 1 January 2021 and 1 January 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the population of the EU decreased by 265,257 people. This reduction is attributed to natural population changes (more deaths than births), as net migration remained positive (more people entered the EU than left). In addition, the pandemic played a role. In the same period, the population of Albania decreased by 36 thousand people with a decrease of 1.2%, while the natural increase was negative by about 3300 people as the pandemic brought deaths to higher levels than births.
Of Europe's 3,980 regions, the 1,164 for which data are available had a negative rate of natural population increase (represented by the strong gold tones on the map), 173 regions recorded a positive rate and 11 regions saw no change (same number of births as deaths), both shown in green-blue tones on the map.
In 2021, all regions of Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Portugal and Romania recorded negative rates of natural population change. In the cases of the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia, almost every region recorded a negative rate with one exception each.
Most affected by population loss were all regions of Bulgaria. In contrast, every region in Ireland had positive rates of natural population change in 2021, while a relatively high number of regions in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden also recorded positive rates. This also happened in Luxembourg and Cyprus.
According to data from INSTAT, 27,284 babies were born in Albania during 2021, marking a decrease of 2.8%, compared to the previous year. During 2021, 30,580 people lost their lives, marking an increase of 10.8%, compared to 2020.
During 2021, four regions of the country recorded a positive natural population increase, while in the other eight regions the natural population increase was negative.
