Interested in the fate of Tirana, my beloved city, I am following these days with attention the debates on television of the candidates of different political parties in the race for the mayor and the future municipal council of the capital city.
Last night, in one of the most watched shows on TV Klan, the candidate of the "Together We Win" coalition, Belind Kelliçi, was invited. He had chosen to be accompanied in the studio by six "experts", as it seems from the close circle of his collaborators today in the campaign and tomorrow, if he is elected mayor, in the municipal council. I will not write about these, because I do not know them, and they themselves either did not say a word, or, as experts, spoke very little. Except for one, who was presented to the public by Kelliçi as "one of the best urban planners in the country". Those who know this urban planner know that this is a big lie.
There would be no need to mention this fact if the escort of experts who accompanied Kellici to that studio was not what I saw. And I believe they are the best that this candidate in the race could have chosen. Here I would like to talk only about some aspects that impressed me the most - and killed my ears - in what Kelliçi said and the way he said it in that confrontation last night with some respected journalists in the Klan studio.
The first has to do with his ideas, vision and plans for the development of Tirana, if the majority of its residents would trust him with the administration of the city's affairs and their well-being.
One of the features that was easily noticed in the ideas that he elaborated, in the vision that he offered and in the plans that Kelliçi presented last night, as well as before, is nihilism, the almost complete denial of the achievements made by the municipality of Tirana and its current mayor in these eight years. This nihilism, in itself, is not only a sign of Kelliç's weakness in the race for the head of the municipality, but also a very bad omen, if the citizens of Tirana were to make the mistake of voting for him.
The consequences of nihilism in politics and administration are historically known, from the time of the Russian Marxist revolutionaries in the early 1900s, who saw nothing useful to preserve from the previous order. Those who were put in charge of the dictatorship of the proletariat in Albania after the Second World War were also nihilists. Sali Berisha and those who came to the head of the country after the fall of that dictatorship were also nihilists. They ruined everything. Belind Kelliçi, although two generations younger than Berisha, belongs to the same school. Berisha is his political and spiritual guru and the man who hand-picked him as a candidate for Tirana.
Another thing that struck me last night, more than before, about this individual is his very limited inventory of knowledge, very little, anecdotal and schematic knowledge, as if it had been hastily put together on Wikipedia. Numbers and city names and statistics that anyone can find on the Internet if they do a Google search.
Unwittingly, last night Kelliçi showed us a terrible lack of imagination and experience, a lot of amateurism, a complete incompetence, a lot of populism, and a dangerous narcissism.
His entire "gradual" plan is summed up in three main promises: free transport for all residents of the capital (but not for those coming to Tirana from other cities), an underpass for vehicles in Skënderbej Square and several pedestrian underpasses in this "uninhabitable" Tirana.
To the promises for these three "magnificent works", Kelliçi added other secondary and tertiary promises, such as a moratorium on the construction of high-rise buildings in the city center, schools, plenty of kindergartens and nurseries, public parking lots, less vehicle traffic, air clean (but not the purification of the sun, as another candidate of his party for the municipality of Durrës once promised, since Tirana is further from the Sun than Durrës).
All this, Kelliçi promises "with great zeal, but with little intelligence", as Shakespeare would say. And none of the experts he had taken with him could help him, except for him, "the best among the country's urban planners", who presented and explained the underpass in Skënderbej Square as if it were a beautiful fairy tale for children.
An even more negative impression and a rather bad taste was left by the rude tone in Kelliç's communication with the journalists invited to the studio to ask him questions. They spoke very little and received almost no answers to the questions they asked because Kelliçi, not only irritated by the reasonable questions of the journalists, but also very irritating to them and to the public who may have watched that show last night, avoided any question and spoke, often with a washed-out irony, only about those things that he had fixed and pre-registered in his head. Boring to the point of annoyance.
And in each case he spoke in a rude tone, which for someone of his age is not only unnatural, but also unpleasant. Maybe because, lost as he feels he is, he wants to at least show himself as a "man" in a campaign that, apart from a free bus (the epitome of his social philosophy and of the much-repeated slogan that he "care for the people" , has nothing else to offer.
Most of the time, even, because of his nervous reactions to journalists' questions, Kelliçi became the cause - and must be held responsible - for the cacophony created in that respected studio. I don't know where the mule takes this man with these attitudes, I'm sure it won't lead him to victory.
But I believe that this will not happen. The majority of old Tirana citizens and young Tirana citizens are wise and love Tirana beautiful and modern as it has become these years and as it can become in the future if they vote again for the mayor they have. Published in DITA
