Two Popes in the Vatican: An Analysis of Coexistence Unprecedented in the
Two Popes in the Vatican

The historic resignation of Benedict XVI, the first Pope to resign in six centuries (the last was Gregory XII in 1415) and his decision to live in the Leonine city, although secluded in the former monastery Mater Ecclesiae, led to a situation really unprecedented: for the first time in two thousand years of Church history, two Popes found themselves living together in the Vatican.

Joseph Ratzinger, among other things, despite having abandoned the pontificate, did not want to be called "bishop emeritus of Rome", as some canonists advised, choosing of his own free will the title "Pope emeritus" or "Roman Pope emeritus", while maintaining the white robe, although without the cape, and the title "His Holiness".

However, the 'coexistence' with his successor, Pope Francis - to whom he had promised "obedience" at the very moment of leaving the papacy at the end of February 2013 - was for several years without shock, in perfect public harmony, absolutely without interference in the government of the Church as to acts or declarations which could in any way call into question the authority or decisions of the present Pope. To live "hidden from the world," devoting his time to study, meditation, and prayer, was the outgoing Pope's declared goal: a line he has always maintained, with 'Bavarian' prudence, interrupted only by a few public appearance, and in 2016 from a couple of interviews and above all from the release of the book-testament, "Last Conversations", an extensive interview with the German journalist Peter Seewald.

For his part, Pope Francis has shown respect like a son for a father for his predecessor in every situation, showing his closeness with frequent phone calls or visits.

"It's like having a wise grandfather at home," he said several times. Francis also acknowledged that with his courageous resignation, an "act of Church governance", Benedict had opened a new path: precisely that of "Popes Emeritus", who did not exist before and who instead now, with the extension of life and with possible decisions similar to Ratzinger's at times when advanced age and failing health prompted future popes to resign, they became a figure to be reckoned with and to recognize canonically. Among other things, Francis admitted to Pope Benedict that he was the one who had launched the fight against pedophilia.

This 'coexistence' of apparent harmony was marked by repeated encounters: two images above all, that of March 23, 2013 when the newly elected Francesco went to visit Castel Gandolfo to the Pope 'emeritus' recently, who entrusted him with the box with ' Vatileaks investigation made by his three cardinals - 007 Herranz, Tomko and De Giorgi, and that of December 8, 2015, the opening day of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, when Francis and Benedict XVI pass together, one after the other, the Holy Door of Saint Peter. However, this did not prevent the nostalgia of the 'Ratzingerians' who were against the innovations and reforms of the successor, of the various 'sedevacantists', who considered the resignation of Benedict XVI to be invalid, because it did not it was freely given. They also considered Bergoglio's election invalid due to an annulled vote caused by the presence of an additional ballot. The statements of Ratzinger's secretary and prefect of the Papal Family, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, in the "enlarged ministry with one active member and another contemplative" caused a sensation in May 2016, which saw Benedict XVI "as having taken a step aside to make room for his successor and for a new phase in the history of the Papacy". Somewhat explosive statements, which brought, albeit for a short time, quite a bit of vitality to Bergoglio's opponents. But it was he, asked the following month by journalists during the flight that brought him back to Rome from Armenia, that put an end to the controversy. "I heard - he said of the Pope emeritus - that some went there to complained about "this new Pope..." and he kicked them out! In the best Bavarian style: kind, but he kicked them out." "There is only one Pope," he added firmly, speaking of his predecessor as "this great man of prayer, of courage who is Pope Emeritus—no The second pope - who is faithful to his word and who is a man of God, he is very intelligent and for me he is the wise grandfather of the house."
