Florian Rama, an Albanian national, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of a 25-year-old man in Spain in 2019. A court ruled against him and ordered him to pay more than 214,000 euros in compensation to the victim's family.

On May 8, the Provincial Court of Pontevedra sentenced Florian Rama, an Albanian citizen, to 20 years in prison for the murder of Soufian Mahra, a 25-year-old who died after being stabbed seven years ago in Salceda de Caselas, a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, Spain.

The case had caused shock in the autonomous community of Galicia due to the violence of the attack and the circumstances of the crime.

According to the court's decision, the defendant attacked the victim with a knife in the early hours of June 8, 2019, after an argument allegedly sparked by Mahra spilling a drink on him inside a nightclub.

The court concluded that the murder occurred unexpectedly and without giving the young man any chance to defend himself.

The sentence, handed down on 8 May, upheld the earlier verdict by the Jury, which ruled that the murder was premeditated. However, the court ruled that the attacker had deliberately increased the victim's suffering, a circumstance that would have increased the sentence to 25 years in prison.

The judge in the case stated that the degree of guilt of the convicted person was "the maximum in this case," considering the fatal outcome "absolutely disproportionate" to the motive that caused the altercation.

The decision also noted that the victim maintained a conciliatory attitude and even attempted to apologize before being attacked.

The court's ruling determined that Soufian Mahra died from stab wounds that pierced her heart. Furthermore, the judges determined that Rama acted in surprise and directed the stab wounds to vital areas, circumstances that supported the aggravating factor of treason.

Local newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported that the court described the act as "an absolutely unprovoked attack" and stated that the attack "was almost immediately fatal." The court also criticized the defendant for leaving the scene without helping the injured young man and then for fleeing Spain before being arrested in the United Kingdom.

During the trial, it was revealed that the victim suffered three stab wounds, one of them to the chest, considered fatal, in addition to wounds to the back and shoulder. After the attack, Mahra walked a few meters trying to chase his attacker, but collapsed due to bleeding.

The sentences and compensation imposed on Florian by the Spanish court:

-20 years in prison for murder.

-Payment of over 214,000 euros to the victim's family.

-Compensation of €70,175 for each parent.

-Payment of €24,836 to each of Soufian Mahra's brothers and sisters.

-Banned from returning to Spain for 10 years if he is granted parole or third-degree status.

-Serving his sentence in Spain.
