The Albanian Parliament is expected to hold a session on July 30th where the center of discussions will be the agreement with the United States of America for the purchase of military equipment with a value that, according to VoxNews sources , amounts to around 300 million euros .

The Council of Ministers has approved the decision to propose to the Parliament the ratification of the direct loan agreement between the Republic of Albania, represented by the Ministry of Finance, and the United States of America, represented by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), within the framework of the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program.

The decision is dated July 24, 2026 and provides for the review of the draft law through an accelerated procedure in the Assembly.

This purchase aims to increase Albania's defense spending to the level of 2% of Gross Domestic Product, in line with NATO's objective for member countries.

Reaching this threshold is considered an important step to avoid any reservations that could affect the organization of the NATO summit in Tirana.

Previously, the US administration and President Donald Trump had expressed reservations about the fact that Albania was spending about 1.6% of GDP on defense, below the Alliance's target.

The draft law drafted for the ratification of the agreement stipulates that it will become an integral part of the law after approval in the Assembly and that the law enters into force 15 days after publication in the Official Gazette.
