The Supreme Court will review this Tuesday the security measure against Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, after the case was returned for reconsideration by the Constitutional Court. The hearing is scheduled to take place at 09:30 in the Council Chamber.

In the decision that it will have to reconsider for the first citizen of Tirana, the High Court will have to justify whether the "prison arrest" measure is proportional in relation to Veliaj's position as mayor.

The majority of constitutional judges ruled that the Supreme Court had not provided sufficient arguments as to why Veliaj should be kept in prison, while he is also the elected head of the Municipality of Tirana.

The review of Veliaj's prison sentence will take place at a time when the Supreme Court reviewed a 2011 unifying decision on the security measure of prison arrest and its duration. A decision that stipulates that the prison sentence should be taken after other alternative measures have been realistically considered.
