In the Albanian market, there are ice creams contaminated with ethylene oxide, a chemical substance very dangerous for human health.

This was revealed by the head of the SSC during the reporting to the Committee on Economy and Finance.

Arben Shehu spoke about the Oncology scandal, saying that according to him, the situation there is only the final point of responsibility. He said that the causes that caused the growth of tumors in the country should be analyzed.

"Continuously, we would like to have an opportunity to cooperate. Support is not only required for the work, but for achieving the objectives, and for solving the problems that we have encountered in our work. As we mention the situation in Health, such as that of Oncology, there is a maximum high level of risk that requires the responsibility of the staff of KLSH but also of the institution that monitors the hospital. Great attention is required for the implementation of the recommendations we have given for health, we will ask for an analysis. We believe that the situation in oncology is the final point of responsibility. There should be an analysis of the factors that have influenced the increase of patients with tumor diseases", said Shehu.

Shehu revealed that in Albania, ice creams contaminated with Ethylene Oxide have been shown to cause cancer, leukemia and affect reproductive capacity in men.

"On 27.7.2021, ice cream brands were discovered, Ethylene Oxide in ice creams produced in France, it was discovered by Spain, which has subsequently notified 47 countries in the ras system, about the contamination of ice cream with Ethylene Oxide in some ice creams. Then on 30/7/2021, an email came from the leaders of AKU about this. AKU was notified immediately and should have taken measures to stop the circulation of contaminated ice creams. Ethylene oxide causes cancer, leukemia, affects reproductive capacity in men. AKU did not take any action, did not block this product", he said.

Cancer cases caused by these ice creams may have increased the number of patients at the Oncology Department

"It is not only important to implement our recommendations, but it should be brought to your attention as in this particular case, you should set up working groups for analyzes mainly for the situation in health, for the analysis of the growth of tumor diseases in health", he said.

Ethylene oxide is a substance used in cosmetic products such as creams and perfumes. However, acute exposure to this substance can cause from the mildest symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting, to the most severe such as cancer, reproductive problems and neurotoxicity.
