An Albanian has become one of the protagonists of human stories after the devastating fire that swept through Psatha, in western Attica.

Sokoli, whose name means "falcon", along with three local residents, Andreas, Aris and Alexandros, braved the flames to protect the homes in the area.

On the afternoon of August 3, the wind changed direction and the fire descended from the forest and olive groves towards the homes.

Although the police had ordered an evacuation, the four men returned after seeing the flames approaching the houses.

Without being firefighters and without professional equipment, they took water hoses and every tool at their disposal to fight the flames. Smoke had covered the area, while in some spots the fire reached up to 30 meters high.

For hours, the four men fought to protect the neighborhood's apartments and managed to save some of them.

After facing the fire, Sokoli collapsed, exhausted. With tears in his eyes, he also recalled the first years of emigration to Greece, about 30 years ago.

"We came tired and hungry. At first, the locals didn't like us. They chased us away. Today, together with my friends, we fought as a team to save the village houses," he confessed.

Today, three decades after arriving in Greece, Sokoli risked his life to protect the community where he lives.

The newspaper "Ethnos" writes that for him, the fire did not only destroy homes and property.

“The forest is our first home. Then we built everything else ,” he said.

The story of Sokol and his three friends is one of the human stories of the Psatha fire: four ordinary residents, without professional training or equipment, who instead of leaving, returned to fight the flames and protect their neighborhood.
