Lazër Bashi, the only survivor of the Sunday afternoon attack in Shkodra, has given his testimony before the investigative group, recounting the moments of the attack and how he managed to escape.
"He's got our backs cut," were the first words Bashi said on the phone after he managed to leave the scene. He happened to be in the same SUV as Prelë and Lekë Gjon, father and son, who were killed by the hail of bullets.
According to his testimony, the vehicle was shot at with two different weapons. Bash, who was in the back of the SUV, stretched out to protect himself and despite being wounded in the shoulder, managed to survive.
The injured man said he waited a few minutes until the perpetrators left and then managed to get out of the vehicle. There was no phone signal in the area where the attack took place, so Bashi was forced to walk about 2 kilometers, for about 40 minutes, with the wound on his shoulder.
After arriving at a bar near the intersection of Pultit and Shoshi streets, he called a relative and asked for help. Then, according to what he said, he cleaned the blood at a tap near the bar and waited for transportation to the Shkodra Regional Hospital. Due to significant blood loss, he was later taken to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana, where his life is out of danger.
"I was in the same SUV with the victims. The vehicle was shot with a hail of bullets. I was in the rear of the SUV, I escaped. Our vehicle was shot at with two different weapons. I waited for the perpetrators to leave so I could call for help."
"The vehicle overturned due to loss of control, I barely managed to get out. There was no signal in that area, I walked 2km and then went to a bar where I called my family," he is reported to have said, among other things.
Meanwhile, the Shkodra Police and Prosecutor's Office continue investigations to identify and capture the perpetrators of the assassination. So far, several people have been taken in for questioning, while investigators are verifying several leads, including possible conflicts between the victims.
Prelë and Lekë Gjoni were shot while they were traveling towards Shkodra, after having been in the Dukagjini area. The perpetrators are suspected of having used two firearms and fired dozens of bullets at the SUV.
