If the students of the faculty of medicine resist accepting the agreements to work for about 5 years after completing their studies in Albania, then very soon the doctors who retire will not be able to be replaced, as for fulfilling the standard of doctors per number of inhabitants that Albania already has it very low, it is not even a question.

The Ministry of Health has reported to the Assembly that currently around 5,400 doctors provide services in the health system, translated into 1.93 doctors for every 1,000 inhabitants. There is still work to be done to further increase the density of doctors in the country, and to bring it to the level of the countries of the region (2.6 doctors/ 1 000 inhabitants), and further to the level of the OECD countries (3.6 doctors/ 1 000 inhabitants). ).

The Ministry of Health announces that there is an immediate need to address in a more comprehensive and concrete way the phenomenon of doctors leaving the system and the country and the gaps created. On the other hand, the majority of the medical corps belongs to the 55-65 age group, which means that the country will soon have difficulty replacing them.

"Projections and assessments of the situation for the future have been made taking into account a number of factors, such as the percentage of doctors who retire every year, the weight occupied by doctors aged 55-65, as well as the new flows that will be the system of licensing in the public and non-public system. Above all, medium-term policies and programs are needed to ensure the availability of health professionals to guarantee that the health workforce responds above all to the safety of the population's health, based on demographic developments and in response to phenomena such as the mobility of doctors in other countries" analyzes the Ministry of Health.

Recently, the government has proposed a draft law "For the special treatment of students who follow the integrated program of the second study of the general medicine program, which aims to sign an agreement with medical students to work for 5 years in Albania after graduation of studies, against the exemption from the fee, otherwise they will have to bear the tuition costs themselves, which amount to about 6500 euros per year.

The government argued that the draft law was proposed in the public interest to ensure that the needs for human resources in the performance of public health services in health institutions are sufficiently high.
