"Chicken Road", the new online fraud scheme that is extorting Albanians

As the Police uncovered the perpetrators behind pyramid schemes that deceived Albanians by luring them to invest in cryptocurrencies, another form of fraud is spreading online. It is about a game called "Rruga e pulës". Citizens are invited to play the game to win money and then they are asked for their bank details with the argument that they will be given the winnings there.

"It's the next scheme that I predict we'll talk about as the new form of online fraud," says Nadia Elbasani, a cybersecurity lecturer.

Translated into Albanian, it would be “The Chicken Road.” Unlike the recent pyramid schemes that tricked Albanians into investing in cryptocurrencies, “The Chicken Road” is a game.

"So far we have seen fraud, we have seen fraud that occurs in the name of cryptocurrencies. A sector that still carries a mystery and not everyone understands it. But the gaming industry is too simple for everyone to embrace. Therefore, the probability of falling prey to this scheme is even higher ," said Nadia Elbasani.

It is spreading especially on the social networks "TikTok" and "Telegram". Albanians are invited to play the game to win money and then asked for their bank details with the argument that the winnings will be given there.

"Playing an online game and providing personal and banking information with the claim that by playing this simple game you will win money, and by also proving that certain characters are actually Albanian, increases the risk of falling prey to the next fraud in the gaming industry ," she emphasized.

"Fraud", in all its forms or ways, has roots as deep as humanity itself. Over the years, adapting to social, economic and political changes, it has undergone "mutations", but its effect on infecting individuals in particular and society in general has remained the same.

"I call on everyone listening to this interview today, as well as the responsible authorities, to take action today before it is too late," the pedagogue appeals.

The temptation to earn as much and as quickly as possible is a "microbe" that apparently exists in the mind of every person and the functioning mechanisms of every society. /A2 CNN
