Two Albanians have been found guilty of murdering a cannabis thief, beating him to death and dumping his body on the street.

Josif Nushi, 27, Mihal Dhana, 29, resident of Cardiff, killed Tomasz Waga, 23, after trying to steal drugs from a brena cannabis factory at home.

Gardener Hysland Aliaj, 31, who discovered Waga at the cannabis plant, was found guilty of manslaughter.

Waga had traveled to Cardiff from London on January 28 last year with Carl Davies with a plan to break into a cannabis plant at 319 Newport Road with £120,000 worth of plants.

Immediately, an organized crime gang, responsible for the factory, "descended" on the scene and attacked the thief.

The 23-year-old victim was beaten with a baseball bat, bamboo cane and half a house brick before being dragged out of the house and thrown into a Mercedes car.

He suffered 25 head and mouth injuries, bruises on his chest and damage to his ribs and arms.

After his death, he was dumped in Westville Road and his mobile phone was taken.

The deceased was later found by a passerby.

On Wednesday, gang members Josif Nushi, 27, and Mihal Dhana, 29, were found guilty of Waga's murder following a trial at Newport Crown Court.

Prosecutor Greg Bull KC said: “In 2020, an organized crime gang of Albanian nationals established a commercial cannabis grow plant in a residential area of Cardiff. It was a well-run, organized and profitable enterprise. It was so successful and profitable that the gang members were prepared to protect it at all costs, if necessary."

"Their determination to protect their valuable crops would come to the fore after 10:30 p.m. on January 28, 2021, when these five defendants, along with others, killed Tomasz Waga, a young man who had intended to steal cannabis cultivation from the factory in Newport Road. As he and Carl Davies did so, he was confronted by a gang, some of whom were armed with a baseball bat, a brick and other paraphernalia. He received multiple injuries and was transported from the factory at 319 Newport Road, Cardiff in a Mercedes car. On the way he died and was robbed."

After the murder, Nushi, Dhana and Aliaj fled to Albania, but were eventually extradited back to the UK before facing trial.

Nushi, of Ninian Road, Roath, and Dhana, of Colum Road, Cathays, were also found guilty of wounding with intent, in relation to Carl Davies, while Aliaj, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of unlawful wounding.

Mr Justice Cotter remanded the three defendants in custody to appear for sentencing on January 10 next year.

He told Nushi and Dhana that there was only one sentence to give in their case, one of life imprisonment.

The judge said it was up to him to serve a minimum term.

Earlier in the trial, Gladis Mehalla, 20, of no fixed abode, and Mario Qato, 27, of Lansdowne Road, London, were found not guilty of Waga's murder.

After the hearing, Waga's family said: “Tomasz paid a very heavy price for the events that took place on the night he lost his life. We do not wish such a tragedy to be experienced by any other family and urge individuals to consider the choices they make and the impact of their involvement, whether intentional or forced. He will remain in our hearts forever."
