Albanian Amarildo Vllazeria, former mayor of Mortsel in Belgium, was arrested by the police after appearing in the Sky Ecc app intercepts.

He was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a drug investigation and has since been released on bail, according to local media.

Detectives from FGP Antwerp raided five locations on Tuesday, including the temporary municipality in Meerminne, the offices of OCMW Mortsel on Deurnestraat and addresses in Wilrijk and Antwerp.

Three people in their twenties have been arrested, including Amarildo Vllazeria, 27.

He would be sworn in as a municipal councilor in the town of Mortsel on Tuesday evening and would replace Caro Abutoh for three months.

The three are suspected of being members of a criminal organization that was involved in cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp in 2020 and 2021.

This is evident from the messages deciphered by Sky ECC, which discuss the import of more than 150 kilograms of cocaine. The drugs would also be exported to other countries, in vehicles equipped with hidden compartments.

"There is talk of imports via the port of Antwerp, where port workers are also being recruited," says spokesman for the public prosecutor's office, Kristof Aerts.

“There were also plans for a cannabis plantation in Mortsel.”

During the searches, luxury goods, cell phones, and 9 thousand euros in cash were found.

According to the public prosecution, there is concrete evidence that Vllazeria is involved in the export and transportation of narcotics.

The others who were arrested on Tuesday were also released, while the investigation is still ongoing, the prosecution emphasizes.

Vllazeria was chairman of the special committee on social services, the former council of OCMW, from October 2023 until the end of the previous mandate.

He has also served on the police council of the Minos police precinct.

During the municipal council elections in October 2024, Vllazeria was not elected to a seat on the municipal council.
He is still a member of the special committee on social services.

The investigation will be able to clarify whether Vllazeria abused his mandates in the city of Mortsel.

The drug offenses and the criminal organization he is said to have been involved in date back to 2020 and 2021, when he was still mayor. Vllazeria has been a councilor in Mortsel since 2018.

Mortsel Mayor Michiel Hubeau and the chairwoman of the special committee, Nadia Saouti, declined to comment on the operation.

"We are not involved in the investigation," he said.
