UN: The situation in northern Gaza is apocalyptic, everyone is in danger of

The situation in the northern Gaza Strip is "apocalyptic", United Nations chiefs said on Friday, warning that its entire population was in "imminent danger" of death.

They said the entire Middle East region was now on a precipice and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

"The situation unfolding in North Gaza is apocalyptic," said the joint statement by the heads of the organizations that form the Permanent Inter-Agency Committee of the UN.

"The area has been under siege for nearly a month, denied basic aid and life-saving supplies, while bombing and other attacks continue. In the last few days alone, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed, most of them women and children, and thousands have been forcibly displaced again.

The entire Palestinian population in Northern Gaza is in imminent danger of dying from disease, starvation and violence," the statement said.

They called on all parties fighting in the besieged Palestinian territory to protect civilians and called on Israel to "stop its attack on Gaza and the humanitarians trying to help".

"Humanitarian aid cannot keep up with the scale of needs due to access restrictions. Basic life-saving goods are not available. "Humanitarians are not safe to do their work and are blocked by Israeli forces and insecurity to reach people in need," they said.

"Humanitarian aid must be facilitated and we call on all parties to provide unhindered access to affected people", while hospitals "must not turn into battlegrounds".

The declaration was signed by the heads of the UN's humanitarian, health, food, rights, migration, refugee, development, children and women agencies, among others.

"The whole region is on the edge of a precipice. An immediate cessation of hostilities and a lasting and unconditional ceasefire are long overdue," they said.
