Better in English than in Albanian! Matriculation grades show the gap. But why?
Graduation?

Over the years, the Albanian language has lost the race with English based on the grades of the matura exams.

Even this year, there are higher results in the English language test than in the Albanian language test. 384 high school graduates received an absolute grade of 10 in English, unlike the results of the Albanian language and literature where only 15 students received the maximum grade.

"We have to admit that the interest of young people is growing in foreign languages. With the support of the family and in the schools, there has been a boom, especially in English, which is reflected in the better level of the students", said Elsa Sheqi, English language teacher, "Asim Vokshi"

But the English teachers make a comparison of the structure of the two exams and point out that during the high school years, the students study the English language for 3 hours per week, while the Albanian language and literature are taught for two hours each per week.

"Albanian language and literature are two subjects in one test, while English is level B2 and graduates are tested for grammar, not for English literature. This affects something", said Elsa Sheqi, English language teacher, "Asim Vokshi"

In addition to the pride shown by English teachers for the good grades that the graduates get there, they are still concerned about the achievements in the mother tongue and demand that the results reflect educational policies with increased importance for Albanian.

"The foreign language is learned when you have a strong foundation of the mother tongue. It is important to know the Albanian language well without question, so that it is easier for us to learn foreign languages"./ TCH
