The Carabinieri of the Bergamo Investigation Unit, with the assistance of the Cislagos (Varese) station, arrested a 47-year-old Tunisian. He will serve a sentence of 6 years and 1 month in prison, handed down by the Bergamo Public Prosecutor's Office following the investigations known as "Romano 2017", which had hit a large drug trafficking network in the province of Bergamo.

The investigation, which began in 2017, was finalized on December 9, 2019, when detention orders were executed against 15 people. During the investigation, it was discovered that the suspects, mainly Albanians and North Africans, were importing cocaine from South America and distributing it in Bergamo. The drugs were initially delivered to the Netherlands and then transported to Italy by foreign couriers, who used vehicles with French and German license plates, modified with hidden floors to carry large quantities of drugs. The total amount of cocaine imported was estimated at over 100 kilograms.

The organization was run by Albanians living in several towns in the province of Bergamo and the surrounding area. They used rented apartments as logistical bases for storing and distributing drugs. The drugs were then sold by African traffickers, who distributed them on the market. Investigations also uncovered a significant fleet of vehicles used for the distribution of narcotics.

The recently arrested Tunisian was not included in the 2019 detention orders, but was convicted of delivering 5 kilograms of cocaine to a fellow countryman in the parking lot of a shopping mall. He is considered a “soldier” of the Albanian organization that ran the drug trafficking and played a significant role in distributing the large amount of drugs.

The Tunisian was sent to the Busto Arsizio prison, where he will serve the sentence given by the court. / Bergamo News
