A serious event has shocked the Albanian community in Jacksonville, where three children lost their lives in a devastating fire in their apartment on Wednesday morning.
Two adults (the parents) and two other children from the same family are in the hospital with critical injuries.
Jacksonville firefighters reported the alarm was raised at 5:13 a.m. on Windergate Drive, near Old St. Augustine Road.
Crews arrived just four minutes later and found large flames on the first floor and heavy smoke on the second floor.
Fire Chief Percy Golden said two adults had managed to get out of the house along with two children before crews arrived.
A neighbor reported that a baby and an adult jumped out of a second-story window and were caught by passersby.
Firefighters searched the apartment and found three children without signs of life. The flames were brought under control at 5:38 a.m.
The victims and survivors were immediately transported to the hospital by JFRD. Meanwhile, the Red Cross is assisting seven adults and six children who were displaced by the fire.
The affected family, known as the Manati family, is originally from Lushnja.
A cousin of theirs, Alessia Firi, has started a GoFundMe campaign that has so far raised over $89,000 to cover medical and funeral costs.
“ Their family and community are completely devastated as they deal with the unbearable pain of this loss, while holding onto hope for healing and recovery ,” Firi wrote on the campaign page.
She added that the hope is to ease even a small part of the financial burden so that the family can focus on healing and staying together.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are being conducted by the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Homicide Unit.
