The former Spaç prison in Mirdita turned into a place of remembrance and pilgrimage on Friday, as Cardinal Ernest Troshani returned after decades to the premises where he served 12 years in prison during the communist regime.

The 98-year-old first visited the former prison building and stood next to photographs of former fellow inmates, remembering one of the most difficult periods of his life.

Afterwards, the Cardinal celebrated Holy Mass in the courtyard of the former prison, in the presence of former political prisoners, believers, representatives of religious communities, and authorities.

In his speech, he called for love, unity and the defense of truth.

"You are the children of the great God, love each other, your homeland and defend the truth. I thank God who has united us and the people who have welcomed me with admiration," said Cardinal Ernest Troshani.

During the ceremony, messages were also conveyed about preserving the historical memory of Spaç, considered a symbol of the crimes of the communist dictatorship and the resistance of the politically persecuted.

Bishop Dom Gjergj Meta called on Albanian institutions to protect the complex as part of historical heritage.

"This site should not be destroyed. If it were destroyed, the younger generations would say that nothing happened. That would be the greatest disaster, because what is forgotten is repeated," he declared.

In recognition of his life and testimony during communist persecution, Cardinal Troshani was presented with a certificate of gratitude and a symbolic gift with the Spaç emblem.

During the ceremony, a message from Pope Leo XIV was also read, who described Spaçi as one of the most painful wounds in Albanian history, but at the same time a place where faith and hope triumphed over injustice.

The activity closed with a prayer in memory of the victims of the communist dictatorship and with an appeal that the history of Spaç be preserved and not forgotten.
