The brother of Democratic Party MP Elda Hoti has been arrested in Rome. Markelian Hoti was caught in the Ponte di Nona area, on the eastern outskirts of the Italian capital, where he was hiding in a hotel with his girlfriend.

He was wanted after being accused of playing a key role in an organization that trafficked cocaine from South America to Europe. Markelian Hoti was arrested in April 2020 by the Albanian police for threatening with a firearm and carrying a weapon without a permit. Hoti was reported for attempted murder. However, he was released very quickly after his arrest.

In addition to her brother, the husband of the Democratic MP is also a well-known name in the criminal world. Ladi Ndoja from Rrëshen, Elda Hoti's husband, was arrested in 2016 in flagrante delicto in Venice, Italy, after turning his house into a drug den.

The police found 50 kg of marijuana and 24 stolen identity cards in the apartment. Ms. Hoti then allegedly made a fictitious separation from Ladi Ndoja, perhaps in order to prevent this 'stain' from affecting her political career, Report TV reports.

Meanwhile, in the 2025 parliamentary elections, the MP's husband was arrested along with another person after they stopped a vehicle carrying the Director of Education in Mirdita, Renuar Kola, claiming that he was buying votes for the Socialist Party.

Despite arresting the official on the grounds that he was buying votes, police said that lists of voter data were found on the MP's husband and another DP supporter.

Meanwhile, in 2021, Llesh Nikolli filed a complaint with the CEC, accusing MP Elda Hoti of hiding the change of her father's name from David to Artan Hoti, due to his criminal past. MP Hoti denied the accusations.
