Greece had been looking for him for 13 years for murder, the 47-year-old lived

A 47-year-old Albanian man who had been wanted by Greece for 13 years was captured minutes after he set foot at Rimini airport in Italy.

Authorities said his escape ended yesterday afternoon (February 17), at the 'Rimini Fellini' airport, when police tracked him down as soon as he got off the plane arriving from Albania.

The 47-year-old Albanian was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Greek judicial authorities for a murder and attempted murder committed in 2012 – using a firearm, the incident taking place in Agios Panteleimon, a popular seaside resort in eastern Greece, not far from Athens.

After killing one of his compatriots and seriously injuring another, the 47-year-old disappeared, disappearing between Greece and Albania.

Thanks to the investigative efforts of the Rimini border police, the wanted person was apprehended after his flight from Tirana landed in Rimini. The exchange of information between the “Sirene” police department, the State Police and the Greek police forces was essential.

"Rimini border police officers, already on standby in the hours before the flight from Tirana landed, met the plane on the tarmac. As soon as the passenger passed the document check (he was travelling with a valid passport), he was stopped. The man did not resist and was taken to the Border Police offices for identification procedures and then transferred to Rimini prison, awaiting a hearing before the Bologna Court of Appeal, which has jurisdiction over extradition," Italian media reported  .

The procedural process now requires the Greek authorities to formalize the request for surrender for extradition purposes. In the coming days, the judges of the Bologna Court of Appeal will assess whether the conditions are met.
