Svetlana Timofeeva built a career photographing abandoned sites around the former Soviet Union. She has published two books under her professional name, Lana Sator, filled with images of abandoned missile silos, forgotten submarines and rusting lines of armored tanks. Her Instagram account has 250 thousand followers. She was then arrested for espionage.
In August, police in Albania found Timofeeva, a 33-year-old Russian citizen, along with two companions in a destroyed weapons factory in the hills south of Tirana, where AK-47 rifles were once manufactured. Investigators discovered cameras, photography drones, phones, hand-drawn maps and $6,000 in cash. Investigators say one of her companions, another Russian, 24-year-old Mikhail Zorin, had been in contact with unidentified people at home in Russia while in Albania.
Albania's defense minister, Niko Peleshi, said alarm bells rang after Zorin threw pepper spray at two guards who discovered him wandering around the weapons factory.
"It cannot be passed off as an ordinary incident. The fact that he acted violently makes us more vigilant," he told reporters at the time, adding that there had been some preliminary discussions about renovating the old weapons factory to produce ammunition.
In court, the three were presented in handcuffs and are being held in a high-security facility. They deny accusations of espionage. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison. Timofeeva is known in the world of urbex, short for urban exploration in the language of the genre's legions of Internet fans. She has posted pictures from more than 30 countries. The other arrested persons, Zorin and the Ukrainian citizen Fedir Alpatov, are well-known names on the scene.
Lawyers for Timofeeva and the others say they told police they wanted to photograph the abandoned plant in Gramsh for their websites and Instagram accounts, as they have done with other sites around the old Soviet bloc, where urbex is something like a cult entertainment. The group hoped to discover other Cold War sites in Albania by renting a sports car for their trip, in this case an orange Chevrolet Corvette with black racing stripes on the hood.
I pandehuri i tretë përfaqësohet veçmas.
Her first stop after meeting Messrs. Zorin and Alpatov was an abandoned military factory in Polican, about 60 miles from the coast. They walked through narrow streets, finding their way by flashlight. Many of the photographs were posted online, showing old ammunition and battered processing machines. Investigators said the trio told them the trip to Gramsh should be pretty much the same: After stopping for pizza, they'd go inside, take a few pictures, upload them to their blogs. / The Wall Street Journal /
