The Albanian mafia has penetrated to the state structures of Brussels and Antwerp, corrupting police officers, judges or even politicians. Antwerp returned to the attention of public opinion, even after the murder of Bledar Muca who was shot with 12 bullets.
One of the most famous Belgian judges, Michel Claise, who has written a book on the Albanian mafia and its connections with other mafias in Belgium , sheds light on this situation .
According to him, the Albanian mafia has been in Belgium for a long time, while explaining how Belgian officials are corrupted. Claise points out that the Albanian mafia is buying businesses in Belgium and laundering money while the state loses 30 million euros a year.
Is your book about what is happening in Brussels?
Michel Claise : Yes, in that book I demand the presence of Albanians in organized crime in Brussels. I have encountered them during Operation ECC Sky, although this is not my direct domain. Financial crime and other forms of crime are closely linked. See what happens to money laundering? Then you face drug trafficking - which is more lucrative - but also the arms trade and VAT evasion. All that money ends up in the legal economy, which makes criminals and their organizations stronger.
You said earlier that the Albanian mafia in Belgium is very active and cruel. You referred to the Albanian who was killed on the street in Molenbeek with 12 bullets. In the last six months, there have been eight gunshots near Zarte Vijvers. According to Mayor Catherine Moureaux (PS), drug gangs play a role in these events. Does the mafia have a hand in this case? The director of the Brussels Federal Judicial Police, Eric Jacobs, said that with the breaking of the coded communication ECC Sky, the criminal world was also discovered in Brussels.
Claise: (shakes his head) Albanian criminal organizations have long been there: in Brussels, and in the rest of Europe. But technology and trade through it have evolved and the crime rate has increased. The Belgian government apparatus does not develop along with crime. There has been considerable corruption lately. We have arrested an official from the French Community Commission (Cocof), as well as seven officials of a municipality. This happens all the time. We are moving more and more towards a criminalized society. It seems that today it is more profitable to be a criminal than a righteous citizen (laughs).
Corruption is the "most troubling" element uncovered in the ECC Sky investigation, according to Deputy Federal Prosecutor Eric Bisschop. Were you surprised that police officers are suspected of collaborating with criminals?
Përveç kësaj, shërbimi qendror kundër mashtrimit i policisë federale (CDGEFID) u mbyll gjithashtu. Disa politikanë e kanë rezistuar me sukses këtë, si p.sh. PS me Ahmed Laaouej. Kemi arritur ta kthejmë ekipin me rreth dyzet veta tani.
Claise: There is nothing new here. In 2001, we hit a whole chain of restaurants where crime money was laundered. In the years that followed, I saw many similar files. I am currently working on a money laundering case in Brussels. Usually the files are international, all judges have some files pending. We see this constantly: in the cleaning sector, in construction, everywhere. We lose billions in losses to the state as a result. After all, it is ordinary citizens who suffer, those who contribute proportionately more to the state treasury due to lower incomes elsewhere.
