GjKKO closes the group of journalists who were not accredited

The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime has closed the WhatsApp communication group that included journalists covering its activities.

Following the entry into force of the new regulation on media access to court proceedings, journalists have decided not to fill out the accreditation forms required by the court, objecting to the new restrictions.

The WhatsApp group was used to communicate announcements and information about court hearings, serving as a practical channel for journalists and editorial staff following the processes at the GJKKO.

The new regulation, which came into effect on September 1, stipulates that journalists who want to attend the hearings must be equipped with a special accreditation card from the GJKKO. If the accredited journalist is absent and the editorial office sends another colleague, the latter is considered part of the public and can enter the hall only if there are free seats.

In addition to the accreditation system, the regulation also restricts the use of mobile phones, recorders and cameras inside the courtroom, raising concerns about how the media can report in real time from court proceedings.

Precisely for these reasons, journalists covering the GJKKO have agreed, at least until a later date, not to fill out accreditation forms and have asked the court to review the regulation.

Meanwhile, the issue has also been followed by the OSCE Presence in Albania, which has announced that it is in communication with the GJKKO and is consulting with other interested parties.
