Imagine if you have very good eyesight, but you wake up one day and see the faces of the people around you appear as demons.
This rare disorder makes people think they are seeing demon-like faces, with elongated eyes and mouths, pointed ears and deep wrinkles set into their faces.
Called Prosopometamorphopsia, the disorder was recently diagnosed in a 59-year-old man, according to a study published in The Lancet. The disorder is so rare that according to a 2021 report, only 81 cases have been recorded in more than 100 years.
"It's like seeing demons," the patient, Victor Sharrah, told CNN. "Imagine waking up one morning and suddenly everyone in the world looks like a creature in a horror movie," he said.
According to the study, "The patient stated that the distortions, elongated facial features, with deep wrinkles on the forehead, cheeks, and chin, were present on the face of every person he met, but he reported no distortions when looking at other objects such as houses or cars".
"The patient said that even though the faces were distorted, he was still able to recognize who they were," the study said.
Victor Sharrah only saw the distortions when looking directly at a person, not when looking at a photo or a computer screen, so the researchers were able to create photorealistic depictions of what those with Prosopometamorphopsia see.
The study did not find the cause of his disorder, but researchers noted that he had an arachnoid cyst in his brain.
An arachnoid cyst is a "noncancerous fluid-filled sac that grows in the brain or spinal cord," explains the Cleveland Clinic. While they can cause headaches, "treatment is not always necessary" unless they cause problems.
"Untreated arachnoid cysts can cause brain damage and movement problems," the researchers say.
However, while the cyst was noted in the study, a definitive link could not be made as to whether it was the cause of this rare disorder.
So, on the Internet, this news has been received with great surprise, causing many conspiracy theories to explode, one of which links it to the solar eclipse of April 8.
