Ioannina, Greece

Janina was once considered the capital of Albania. Ali Pasha of Ioannina had his palaces, castle and dozens of fortifications in the city, now part of Greece. And the city was mostly inhabited by Albanians.

But it seems that today, these old memories wake up as the city that the Greeks call the "capital of Epirus", has seen a great wave of Albanian tourists.

In fact, according to the figures, Albanians hold the first place among foreign tourists who have visited Ioannina, leaving even Germans behind.

According to INSETE, the country in the north of Greece welcomed 1.7 million visitors in 2023. Of these, 219,000 were from Albania, 80,000 from Germany and 76,000 from the United Kingdom.

During the same year, tourism revenue for Northern Greece reached 330 million euros, with 46 million from German visitors, 42 million from Albanian visitors and 41 million from British visitors.

For decades, visitors from Albania have been the most important in both numbers and spending, after Greek visitors, for the city of Ioannina. Their achievements are sustainable, making them a vital source of income for the local economy, supporting hotels, restaurants and the retail sector.

A large part of Albanians, mainly living in the south of the country, choose Ioannina also for health reasons. In the Greek city there are two large hospitals with specialized doctors who offer high service.

Business ties between Ioannina and Albania also remain strong. Many companies in Ioannina have long-term collaborations with Albanian businesses, with new partnerships that continue to be created, benefiting both parties.
