"UK organized crime lords will be stripped of their British citizenship once they leave the country.
This is what the British Ministry of the Interior has announced, as part of the crackdown on people with British citizenship who are suspected of being involved in drug, firearms or immigrant trafficking.
The Home Office is working with Britain's National Crime Agency, which provides an intelligence dossier that the Home Secretary uses to strip individuals involved in crime of their citizenship if they temporarily leave the country, making it impossible their return.
It is unclear how many times this tactic has been used, but foreign media write about 2 cases against 2 Albanians who are suspected of being the leaders of criminal groups in the trafficking of immigrants and drugs.
In the latest case, an Albanian man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is suspected of having organized the smuggling into the UK of hundreds of illegal Albanian immigrants via trucks and small boats across the Channel.
He entered the UK illegally in 1999 claiming to be a refugee from the Kosovo war and was later granted British citizenship. In early 2020 he was arrested by Kent Police on suspicion of money laundering, but no further charges were brought against him. In September of that year, then Home Secretary Priti Patel made a decision to strip him of his citizenship while on a trip to Albania.
He appealed the decision, but the Special Committee on Immigration Appeals dismissed it after seeing the file with the charges against him.
In 2021, Fation Dauti, 38, lost a similar appeal at SIAC after he was stripped of his citizenship on charges of being one of the leaders of a London-based Albanian criminal group involved in cocaine, migrant and money laundering. He was granted a temporary residence permit because he was married to a Latvian citizen of the European Union.
