A serious incident has shaken Athens, where six people have lost their lives after a powerful explosion and the collapse of a three-story building on Lysikratous Street, in the Plaka area. Among the victims are three Albanians with American citizenship, who were in the Greek capital for tourism.

The Albanian victims are Florin Hoxha, his sister Florida Hoxha, and Eris Cani, Florin Hoxha's wife. Their bodies were found this Saturday morning under the rubble of the collapsed building.

Three other people also lost their lives in the incident: Ian Alexander Kirpatrick, Florida Hoxha's husband, as well as Edmond Hings and Athina Papapresku, the owners of the building.

The explosion was so powerful that the three-story building completely collapsed, while surrounding buildings were also damaged. Debris was scattered in the street, while several neighboring buildings were evacuated for safety reasons.

Emergency crews were deployed to the scene, using excavators and thermal imaging cameras to search through the rubble. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the incident as an "extraordinary disaster."

Preliminary suspicions are that the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak, however the final cause has not yet been determined and Greek authorities are continuing their investigations.

The tragedy occurred in one of the most frequented tourist areas of Athens, near the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
