Chelsea reach agreement with Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are close to signing Xabi Alonso as their new manager. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss is expected to sign a four-year contract in the coming days.

The club's board were determined to find a replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was sacked last month. In recent days, it was reported that Chelsea had contacted several candidates, with Alonso, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner also on the list. However, the former midfielder has given the green light, reaching an agreement with Chelsea.

The London club wanted to get through the FA Cup final against Manchester City first before making any decision on the new appointment public.

Negotiations have been ongoing for several weeks and Alonso has been open to this challenge, after receiving some assurances from the management. The Spaniard's name was also linked with a possible return to Liverpool, where pressure on Arne Slot has increased, but the Anfield club seems to have decided to confirm the current technician.

Xabi Alonso has been a free agent since January, when he left Real Madrid after less than eight months in charge. Earlier in his career, he led Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title and German Cup triumph.
