Karim Benzema could soon end his experience in Saudi Arabia at Al-Ittihad, which started in 2022.
Arriving as a Ballon d'Or winner amidst fireworks and a packed stadium to welcome him, the former Real Madrid striker is now seriously considering a return to Europe. The reason is linked to an inexplicable contract renewal proposal from the Saudi club itself.
According to L'Equipe, the player - whose contract expires on June 30 - was expecting a call to renew. The call and invitation came just five days before the transfer window closed and caught him and his entourage by surprise. The proposal was considered "negligible" because it practically provided for him to "play for free", leaving only the image rights unchanged.
As reported by Foot Mercato, Benzema has begun to consider leaving and a possible return to Europe.
A reaction that has put Al-Ittihad in difficulty, whose leaders feel helpless in the face of the situation. A heavy blow for Sergio Conceiçao's team, which risks losing its captain and one of the main protagonists of last season's championship-cup double.
The player felt insulted by the proposal, expecting more respect for his past and current contributions.
"I'm part of the project, I'm in the right place," Benzema had declared a month and a half ago to L'Équipe, showing his willingness to continue in Saudi Arabia. But everything changed in a matter of seconds.
