English football is experiencing another historic season in the Champions League, confirming the supremacy of the Premier League in the most prestigious European arena. A total of five teams from England have secured qualification among the top 16 teams of the tournament, a figure that clearly speaks to the level, depth and extraordinary competition that the English championship offers. Of these, four teams have booked their ticket directly to the knockout stage, while only Newcastle will have to go through the “playoff”.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have all qualified directly, avoiding the risk of an extra round and positioning themselves as serious contenders for the trophy. Meanwhile, Newcastle have achieved great success by securing the play-off, where they will face either Monaco or Qarabag. A draw that is manageable on paper, but which requires maximum caution.
If compared to other major leagues, the difference is huge.
No Italian team has managed to qualify: Inter, Juventus, Atalanta and Napoli (who were actually eliminated) portray a Serie A that is struggling to keep up the pace in terms of intensity and big matches. The two Nerazzurri clubs have suffered setbacks in key matches, while the Old Lady remains in the race but has never given the impression of absolute solidity. The big failure is that of the Italian champions, an important elimination for their prestige and ambitions.
Bayer Munich holds the Bundesliga title, but behind them there is a gap: Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund will compete in the playoffs, with ups and downs and some defensive weaknesses, while Eintracht Frankfurt was eliminated. Even more surprising are the results achieved by the Spanish clubs: Barcelona retained its honor with direct access, but Real Madrid, forced to go to the playoffs, is the one making the most noise. Not a complete tragedy, but a sign of a less dominant La Liga than in the past; Atlético Madrid will follow the same path, while Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal are eliminated.
France also leave with broken bones. Defending champions PSG disappointed. Marseille were eliminated, while Monaco will enter the playoffs without any real ambition.
This dominance is no coincidence. The huge investments, the intensity of the championship, the quality of the coaches and the high level of the players have turned the Premier League into a benchmark for European football. With five teams among the top 16 and with great ambitions to go all the way, England enters the final stage of the Champions League as the main force on the continent.
The playoff draw will take place on Friday, at 11:00 AM, and is awaited with great interest, as it will also determine the possible paths of the major European teams.
