An unprecedented wave of worldwide outrage has shaken the foundations of the World Cup, translated into a massive online petition demanding the eternal exclusion of the Argentine national team from the competition.
The initiative achieved staggering numbers, collecting over 23 million signatures in just seven days. The campaign was only 1 million signatures away from breaking the absolute world record of 24.3 million signatures, held since 1997 by the “Jubilee 2000” movement.
Fan anger and conspiracy accusations
At the heart of the petition were serious accusations directed at FIFA and the refereeing body of an open bias in favor of Lionel Messi and the Latin American team. The organizers raised a poignant question that resonated globally: “Why should the rest of the world compete when the winner has already been decided?”
The momentum of this campaign was fueled by a number of other grievances during the tournament, including stratospheric ticket prices and the questionable use of "hydration breaks", which were seen by many fans as a favoritism tactic.
The dramatic end: Spanish heroism and fistfights on the pitch
The petition storm was only subdued after the score was settled on the green field. Spain managed to defeat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the grand final, ending the Argentine dream. With the match over, the petition organizers closed their campaign with a triumphant message: “FIFA ignored us, but Spain did. Thank you, Spain.”
However, the tension off the pitch quickly spilled over onto the pitch. The defeat was not well-received by Argentina, with players from both teams getting into a massive physical altercation after the final whistle. As a result of the scandal, FIFA has officially confirmed the opening of a disciplinary investigation into some of the Argentine players involved in the incident.
