Beneath a quiet fishing village, an entire underground city was built

Before 1965, Vinh Moc was a quiet fishing village in central Vietnam. The surrounding landscape was green, with rice fields, bamboo, and golden beaches.

But the village's strategic position, near the line that separated North and South Vietnam, would make it one of the most bombed places on the planet during the Vietnam War.

For more than eight years, American forces dropped about nine thousand tons of explosives on this area. For the residents, leaving was not a realistic option. The village was under constant attack and the only way to survive was to hide underground.

Thus began the construction of the Vinh Moc tunnels. Within just two years, the inhabitants created an extraordinary underground complex, with thick walls, vaulted ceilings, and corridors built in a zigzag pattern to cushion the effects of explosions.

Hundreds of people lived there for about six years, while the bombing continued overhead. The complex was not just an emergency shelter. It turned into a real underground community, with living spaces and various services.

A maternity ward was even built there. At least 17 children were born underground while the war continued above ground. But the Vinh Moc tunnels were just one part of a vast underground network built in Vietnam during the war.

They show how a civilian population, faced with massive bombing, tried to create a new way of life underground.

Today, the tunnels are one of the most unique testimonies of the Vietnam War and a reminder of what people can do when survival depends on ingenuity and adaptation.

However, the history of underground bunkers is not limited to Vietnam. On the Polish island of Volyn, a popular holiday destination today, the Nazis secretly built a vast complex of bunkers and tunnels in 1936.

The project was a clear violation of the Treaty of Versailles, which prohibited German rearmament after World War I. Today, this network, known as the “Volyn Underground City,” is open to visitors.
