A year and a half after the parliamentary and presidential elections in North Macedonia, the country is preparing for new elections on October 19: the first round of local elections.
Citizens will vote for mayors and members of municipal councils in all 80 municipalities, as well as in the capital, Skopje.
According to polls, the outcome in most municipalities with a Macedonian majority population is largely predictable. The results also remain unclear in some municipalities where Albanian voters constitute the majority, excluding the municipality of Struga.
For the Municipality of Struga, the well-known Albanian businessman Mendi Qyra is running as an independent.
According to preliminary polls, Qyra has a large advantage over his opponents and is expected to be the winner of the elections in the Municipality of Struga.
In addition to support in Struga, Qyra also has great support from the Albanian diaspora in North Macedonia.
Hundreds of Albanians have traveled from Vienna and other European cities to Struga to support Mendi Qyra.
His candidacy has come at the right time in response to the ongoing demand from a wide section of citizens, the business community and interest groups of Struga, who see Mr. Qyra as a figure of high integrity and with proven experience in economic development and successful management.
At a time when Struga needs a clear vision, strategic investments and efficient leadership, the figure of Mendi Qyra comes as a serious alternative for the change and sustainable development of this municipality with rare natural beauty and great economic potential.
"Struga needs work, not words. It needs investments, not empty promises. I am ready to put my experience at the service of my city", emphasized Mr. Qyra during the campaign.
In a television interview given on Friday evening, the independent candidate for the Municipality of Struga, Mendi Qyra, stated that he has secured support from the VALEN coalition, as well as indirectly from the Government.
"Of course, I am an independent candidate for mayor of the city of Struga. And of course you have information that I am supported by the VALEN coalition and at the same time indirectly by the Government ," said Qyra.
He added that his candidacy enjoys broad support from various sectors of society.
"I am also supported by the business committee. I am also supported by the nationwide Albanian business forum which is very powerful in the economy. I am also supported by various interest groups which deal with culture, business, sports and others," he declared.
Qyra emphasized that he has decided to run as an independent candidate to seek the votes of all citizens, beyond party lines.
