Albania has obligations to implement all conditions to create free and fair elections. This was the comment made by the US envoy, Gabriel Escobar, when asked about the possibility of monitoring the local elections in Albania.
"As far as the monitoring of local elections is concerned, all I can say is - I am not fully informed about the monitoring plan, but I can say that Albania has obligations as a member of the OSCE, as a member of the Council of Europe, to be implemented all the conditions to create free and fair elections", he said.
As for the fight against corruption, Escobar said that more efforts and commitment are required on this issue.
"Regarding the fight against corruption, I think that all the countries of the Western Balkans have a lot of work to do. Corruption, as I have repeatedly said, is perhaps the biggest long-term challenge for the entire region. So I want to see more – I would like to make more progress across the region to see the fight against corruption.
In Albania, I would say that there has been a lot of progress over the last 20 years in finding mechanisms, cooperation, and even the implementation of independent investigative bodies that are dealing with corruption. So I would like to see that positive effort intensified," Escobar emphasized.
